The importance of prevention is medical science, has been discovered since ancient times, strongly supported by Hippocrates. Prevention means avoiding the outbreak of the disease and any related complications, something that ensures not only our physical health but also our mental one.
More specifically, the prevention of problems in the mouth and jaw systems can directly affect our overall health if you think about the fact that:
- over one thousand diseases appear in the mouth cavity
- many of these diseases first show in the mouth cavity and have affected or will affect other organs of the body so a diagnosis in time from the dentist can help catch the disease early and start dealing with it
- various microbes in the mouth can pass into the blood streama dn head to other organs such as the heart and cause an infections
- missing teeth of bad chewing ability are one of the most serious causes of digestive system disorders
- bruxism (tooth grinding) or bad occlusion (bite) are main factors in the appearnace of migraines and headaches where a pathological reason has not been found
- gum diseases in pregnant ladies can be associated to preterm birth and a low birth weight
- 95% of injuried to the mouth area that arecaused by sporting activities could have been avoided had a mouthguard been used
- 90% of those wearing dentures could have avoided them if they had visited the dentist twice a year
- a problematic smile can be a basic cause of insecurity, that then reinforces antisocial behaviour (especially in childhood and teenage years), it affects interpersonal relationships and can lead to depression
