Disease in the mouth aren't just in the gums and teeth as most people believe!
The mouth cavity can be a target for a lot of diseases.
It has been calculated that more than a thousand disease appear in the mouth. these can either be disease that only concern the mouth, or disease that affect other organs or the body's systems.
Some of these disease are completely innocent (e.g. thrush), and some are very dangerous (e.g. squamous cell carcinoma). Alot of the time the symptoms are not seen in time by the patient. A delay in the diagnosis can sometimes even be lift threatening.

At the VSmile dental clinic we prioritise in doing an oral hygiene diagnosis from the very first visit, so that:
- we can see any damage in any place in the mouth
- to evaluate the seriousness of the case
- to suggest treatment
- to refer the patient to a specialist doctor for removal of the lesion and biopsy, if necessary
How to we go about the check-up:
The check-up includes:
- a full medical and dental history
- a detailed clinical exam of the mouth cavity, the submaxillary lymph nodes and temporomandibular joints
- an intraoral x-ray using the digital x-ray system (wherever it is deemed necesary)
In some cases we may require additional diagnostic tests that are not available at the dental clinic, e.g. blood tests, diabetes tests, jaw CT etc.
