What is fluoride:
Fluoride is a mineral, that in the way it works on the teeth, can help reinforce the enamel considerably. It is considered to be one of the most important factors in tooth decay prevention, together with sealants and regular dental check-ups it is the epicentre of preventative dentistry.
How does fluoride work:
Fluoride when it goes to work on the teeth, changes the constitution of the enamel, making it more resillient to tooth decaying acids that microbes that live in our mouths create. The reduction in tooth decay for people that use fluoride it between 50% - 70%.
Fluoride effectively helps:
- stop the progression of tooth decay
- prevents secondary caries
- reduces the teeth's sensitivity
Who should use fluroide:
The fluoride embeds itself in the enamel's structure and provides continuing protection for everyone.
Fluoride, however, it believed to be particularly necessary for children, and high-risk patients, where caries may appear - such as atheletes, patients with special needs and anyone who has problems with sensitive teeth.

At the VSmile dental clinic in Piraeus we carefully assess your need for fluoride based on age, the state of the teeth, dietary habits, the oral hygiene level, the frequency of dental visits and possible exsisting conditions. Based on this information we create the correct prevention plan for you. A more agressive program willl be formed for the those with dry mouth and to those patients classed as being high risk for decay.
The fluorosis process is completely painless and is done using a fluoride gel in individual disks that are placed on the teeth for around one minute. The gel comes inv arious flavours (bubble gum, strawberry, cherry etc.) so that the process is more pleasant, especially for children.
In cases where additional fluoride reinforcement is needed on an individual tooth, then a special varnish is placed on that tooth that contains a high level of fluoride.
