What are sport mouthguards?
Sport mouthguards are worn in the mouth during the activity to protect the wearer from hits that can cause damage to the teeth, gums, tongue, lips and jaws.
How effective are they?
It has been proven that the use of mouthguards in sports can reduce the injury rate by up to 95% by absoring the energy of the blow. In some cases they have even prevented concussions. A mouthguard is of particlar importance if you consider that most of the injuries sustained during athletic activities occur around the mouth area.
How many types of guards are there?
- Premade or partially adjustable guards (available in the market)
- Personalized guards (constructed by the dentist specifically for each patient)
Why should I choose a personalized mouthguard?
The mouthguards that are available in stores either have no or very little adjustibility. If a mouthguard is not correctly fitted then certain parts of the mouth may be exposed that in order to be protected should be completely covered. An incorrectly fitted guard can lead to a reduced ability to keep the guard in place. The guards that are available in stores have a set thickness that for some sports are unsuitable to absorb the impact of a hit, they are also cumbersome and as such cause problems with taste, speech and breathing.
