The pregnancy period, and the changes to the body and hormones that go along with it, can cause extensive progression of certain problems, both to the teeth and gums of the expectant mother. Good oral hygiene not only benefits the expectant mother but also the embryo she is carrying. reserach has shown that gum disease can be related to early labour and a low birthweight.
The preventative measures at the VSmile Piraeus dental clinic are done in a way that the pregnant patient, is fully informed regarding the oral issues that can occur during pregnancy, so that they are able to recognise any possible symptoms that need to be reported to the dentist and that they feel safe and can talk with the dentist freely regarding any issues they may have during this time.
Prevention Before Pregnancy:
- We inform anyone who is pregnant or is considering having a baby, regarding the changes that can occr during pregnancy. This way we avoid any dangers that could cause emergent problems during this time
- We proceed with any treatments that are deemed necessary so that the mum to be has healthy gums and teeth
During Pregnancy:
- If there is not urgent problem, we do not carry out any dental treatments during the first three months of pregnancy
- If there is an urgent dental problem, we contact the doctor following the pregnancy, and inform them of the problem and in coordination with them we proceed with any necessary treatments and possible pharmaceutical presriptions
- If it is absolutely necessary to carry out an x-ray, a specialized lead based cover will be placed over the patient's tummy and we use the digital xray system, to take digital intraoral xrays with only very minor raditation emittence.
- We clean the teeth to deal with gingivitis during pregnancy. The safest time to do this is from the 4th to the 6th month of pregnancy.
- We give oral hygiene advise.
- We give dietary advice as it has been shown that what is eaten during pregnancy affects the development of the embryo, including their teeth.
- We monitor the pregnant lady, at no additional cost, once a month, to check the state of the oral hygiene and talk about any problem that they may be facing.
