GINGIVITIS DURING PREGNANCY:
don't ignore the symptoms!
During pregnancy, there are alot of hormonal changes in the mouth, such as higher estrogen and progesterone. This can directly affect the gums even from the second month of pregnancy, that continue to increase right until the ninth month.
The symptoms of gingivitis in pregnancy include swelling, bleeding and redness of the gums. In some cases the gums swell to the extent that there are small lumps. These lumps are benign and painless, and if they don't go away by themselves after the birth, they need to be removed by a peridontologist.
It's important to note that gingivitis during pregnancy can occur despite good oral hygiene. If gingivitis is not dealt with in time it can lead to periodontitis. The best way to deal with gingivitis is for the expectant mother to maintain good oral hygiene, a balanced diet and regular visits to the dentist.
