What do we accomplish with endodontic therapy?
Nowadays, most teeth that have lost a large amount of their dental susbstance, caries, inflammation, pain etc, can be saved and kept in the mouth for several years with the assistance of endodontic therapy which is more commonly known as root canals.
What are the symptoms of a tooth that requires endodontic therapy?
A tooth that requires endodontic therapy may be moving, be painful to certain stimuli, be painful in adjacent gums or it may not show any symptoms at all.
What happens if endodontic therapy is not carried out?
Unforunately in this situation there is no medicine that can heal a bacterial infection in the nerve of a tooth. If the tooth does not undergo endodontic therapy the deterioation of the tooth will continue and the only solution will be an extraction.
What is the process?
Endodontic therapy begins with the removal of the infected nerve from the inside of the tooth, the area is then cleaned and disinfected where needed, this is then covered by a filling to avoid the risk of reinfection. This way the absess goes away and the tooth is healthy and can function as normal within the mouth.

How many visits are required to complete the treatment?
This depends on how serious the situation is and the complexity of the tooth. We usually expect the process to be completed in between 2-3 visits.
Does endodontic therapy hurt?
With the correct use of a local anaesthetic, there is no pain during the treatment.
After te treatment when the local anaesthetic has worn off it is possible that there may be a little discomfort due to the procedure. How effective is endodontic treatment?
The success rate for endodontic therapy is high, around 85%-90%.
In more difficult cases e.g. where the tooth has hanging roots or mulitple root canals this percentage may be lower around 75%-80% .
What happens after the endodontic therapy?
After the endodontic therapy is complete the contiuation is the reconstruction of the tooth, so that the tooth has a perfect look and feel within the mouth, exactly like the rest of the teeth.
The choice for a type of prosthetic tooth depends on many things (e.g. the amount of dental material that has been lost) and depends on each individual case.
